Chapter 11: Choking – Adult and Child

If an adult or child is choking, they might show it by using the universal choking sign—grasping their neck with one or both hands. This is a key indicator that they need immediate help. Here’s what to do:

Ask, “Are you choking?”
If the person nods or is unable to speak or breathe, let them know you are trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and you’re going to help.
Stand or kneel behind the person.
Make a fist with one hand and place it just above their belly button.
Grasp your fist with your other hand and deliver quick, upward abdominal thrusts.
Keep going until the object is forced out and the person can breathe or cough effectively—or until they become unresponsive.
For individuals who are pregnant or too large for abdominal thrusts, perform chest thrusts instead.
If the person becomes unresponsive at any point, begin CPR immediately using the steps for adult or child CPR.
