Chapter 6: Adult CPR: Put It Together

You’ve already gone through the C-A-B method—Compressions, Airway, Breaths. Now it’s time to pull it all together and apply everything you’ve learned in your Online CPR/AED Course. Here’s how to perform Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from start to finish:

  • Start by making sure the area is safe to approach. Put on your personal protective equipment (PPE) if you have it.

  • Next, tap the person and say loudly, “Are you okay?” You’re checking for any response.

  • If there’s no reaction, call out for help right away.

  • Dial 9-1-1, or ask someone nearby to do it. Have someone bring an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if one is available.

  • Now check for a pulse—but don’t spend more than 10 seconds doing it.

  • If there’s no pulse, begin chest compressions immediately. Place your hands in the center of the chest and push hard and fast—30 times, about 2 to 2.4 inches deep.

  • Once you’ve finished the compressions, open the airway with a head-tilt and chin-lift.

  • Then give 2 rescue breaths, each lasting roughly 1 second.

  • Keep going with 30 compressions and 2 breaths. Maintain a rhythm of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Repeat this cycle until help arrives.

This chapter is part of your Online CPR/AED Certification Course and builds on everything you’ve learned so far. Keep practicing these steps so they feel natural in a real emergency.
