Here’s how to respond:

• Position the infant face-up along your forearm, keeping their head lower than your chest. Support the head and neck securely with the palm of your hand.
• Carefully turn the infant face-down, resting your forearm on your thigh for support.
• Using the heel of your hand, deliver 5 back blows between the infant’s shoulder blades.
• If the object doesn’t come out, turn the infant face-up again.
• Give 5 chest thrusts using two or three fingers at the center of the chest, just as you would during infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Continue alternating 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is removed, the infant starts responding, or becomes unresponsive.
• If the infant becomes unconscious, begin the steps for infant CPR right away.
