Chapter 2: Assessing the Situation

As you begin your CPR and First Aid Training, one of the first things to learn is how to check the scene. Your safety always comes first. Before assisting anyone, take a moment to scan your surroundings and make sure you’re not putting yourself at risk.

If the scene involves a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case, the 2021 Interim Guidance recommends putting on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) immediately and limiting the number of people nearby once the area is confirmed safe.

6 steps for wearing gloves and other items for the nurse

PPE includes gloves, eye protection such as goggles, gowns or aprons, face shields or masks, shoe covers, and caps. These are essential for preventing disease transmission while providing care.

Always use disposable gloves to avoid direct contact with blood or bodily fluids. If a victim may have a spinal or neck injury, do not move or shake them.

As part of this Online CPR/AED and First Aid Certification, it’s important to remember the ECC’s Chain of Survival:

  • Early recognition and activation of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Early Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), with a focus on compressions
  • Rapid defibrillation
  • Early advanced care
  • Organized post-care

Each step plays a critical role in improving outcomes during emergencies. Through this First Aid and CPR Certification, you’ll gain the knowledge to act with confidence and safety.
