Chapter 10: Choking: Adult and Child

When someone is choking, every second counts. A common sign is when the person grabs their neck with one or both hands—the universal choking gesture. If you suspect a choking emergency, follow these steps:

  • Ask, “Are you choking?” If the person nods or can’t speak or breathe, tell them you’re trained in CPR and are going to help.
  • Stand or kneel behind the person, depending on their height.
  • Make a fist with one hand and place it just above their belly button.
  • Grab your fist with your other hand.
  • Give quick, upward abdominal thrusts.
  • Continue thrusts until the object is expelled or the person can breathe or cough forcefully.
  • If the person goes unconscious, start Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) right away.
  • If the person is pregnant or too large to reach around, switch to chest thrusts.

This training is part of your Online CPR/AED Certification Course and prepares you to respond quickly and effectively in choking emergencies.
