Chapter 9: Infant CPR

In infants, cardiac arrest is usually the result of a breathing emergency—not a heart issue. That’s why rescue breaths are just as critical as chest compressions when performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

The general process for infant CPR is similar to child CPR, but with a few key differences to account for their smaller size and delicate anatomy:

Compressions
Use two fingers and press down in the middle of the baby’s chest, right between the nipples. You’re aiming for a depth of about 1½ inches. Keep a steady pace, at a rate of at least 100 and 120 pushes every minute. Don’t pause too long between sets.

Airway
Gently tilt the baby’s head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Just be careful not to tilt too far as babies’ airways are small, and going too far can actually block it instead of helping.
Breaths
Cover the infant’s nose and mouth with your own mouth to deliver rescue breaths. If you’re unable to cover both, seal the nose and close the mouth before giving breaths. Each breath should make the chest visibly rise as this lets you know the air is getting in properly.
