Chapter 12: Choking – Infant

When an infant is conscious but can’t cough, cry, or breathe, it’s likely they’re choking. You’ll need to step in right away and begin a series of back blows and chest thrusts.

Here’s how to help:

  • Start by laying the infant face-up on your forearm. Make sure their head is lower than your chest and that you’re supporting their head and neck in your hand.
  • Then, turn the infant face-down. Rest your arm on your thigh to keep them steady.
  • Using the heel of your hand, give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades.
  • If the object doesn’t come out, turn the baby back over.
  • Now give 5 chest thrusts—press down on the center of the chest with 2 or 3 fingers, just like you would when doing infant CPR.
  • Keep repeating 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is cleared, the infant starts breathing again, or becomes unresponsive.
  • If the baby goes unconscious, move straight into infant CPR.
