Chapter 2: Assessing the Situation

Before providing care, it’s critical to pause and assess the situation. Make sure the scene is safe, not just for the victim, but for yourself. Staying alert helps you respond quickly and confidently in any emergency.

If you’re assisting someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, follow 2021 interim safety guidelines. This includes putting on personal protective equipment (PPE) immediately and limiting the number of people involved in care once the scene is secure.

Examples of PPE include:

  • Gloves
  • Goggles or other eye protection
  • Gown, lab coat, or apron
  • Shoe covers
  • Face shield or mask
  • Surgical cap or head covering

When helping someone, protect yourself from disease transmission by using disposable gloves and minimizing direct contact with blood or bodily fluids. If you suspect a spinal or neck injury, do not move or shake the person.

ECC’s Chain of Survival

When preparing to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), follow the five key steps of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Chain of Survival:

  • Early recognition of the emergency and activation of EMS (calling 9-1-1)
  • Early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions
  • Rapid defibrillation
  • Early advanced care
  • Coordinated post-cardiac arrest care
