Chapter 12: Safety Precautions

Your safety always comes first. Before helping someone, make sure the scene is safe for you. Calling 9-1-1 is one of the most important steps you can take in an emergency.

  • If the scene is unsafe, leave immediately.
  • While helping someone, protect yourself from exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves or breathing barriers when available.
  • Cover any cuts, sores, or open skin with a bandage before providing care.
  • Use disposable gloves whenever possible.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing gloves.

If you suspect a spinal or neck injury, do not move or shake the person unless they are in immediate danger.

General Safety Measures

  • Post important emergency numbers near your phone (local emergency services, poison control, physician).
  • Follow all traffic safety laws when driving or riding in a vehicle.
  • Install and maintain smoke alarms in your home; check batteries regularly.
  • Keep flashlights and fire extinguishers accessible.
  • Store chemicals, medicines, and hazardous materials securely and out of children’s reach.
  • Practice safe firearm storage and handling
