Chapter 9: AED

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) delivers a shock to the heart, helping it restart with a normal rhythm. The device will guide you through each step and let you know when a shock is needed.

You’ll see a diagram showing where to place the pads, and instructions will tell you when to resume chest compressions. If someone else is available, they can attach the pads while you continue CPR.

To use the AED:

  • Turn it on and follow the voice instructions
  • Use it only on adults and children age 8 and older
  • Don’t touch the person while the device is analyzing—they could be shocked
  • Move the person away from any water source before using the AED

Additional safety tips:

  • AEDs can be used on people with implanted devices
  • Remove any medication patches before applying pads, using gloves if possible
  • Pads must be placed on bare, dry skin. Shave the area and dry the chest if needed
  • Never turn off the AED or take off the pads once they’re in place
  • After a shock is delivered, the AED will tell you to resume CPR

Child AED Use

  • Follow the AED’s prompts for using child pads or a key/switch
  • If child pads aren’t available, use adult pads
  • If the pads are too large and touch, place one pad in the center of the chest and the other on the back

Using an AED quickly and correctly can increase survival rates to between 30% and 70%. This chapter in your Online CPR/AED Course prepares you to use this critical device safely and effectively.
