Chapter 11: Choking—Infant

If a baby is choking and cannot cry, cough, or breathe, that’s a medical emergency, and you need to act quickly but calmly.

To help a conscious choking infant, follow this step-by-step process using back blows and chest thrusts:

  1. Hold the baby face-up on your forearm with their head positioned lower than your chest. Use one hand to securely support the infant’s head and neck.
  2. Turn the infant over, face down, still resting your forearm on your thigh.
  3. Using the heel of your hand, give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades.
  4. If the object doesn’t come out, turn the baby face-up again and give 5 chest thrusts.
  5. For chest thrusts, use 2–3 fingers in the center of the chest, just like in infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  6. Repeat sets of 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is removed, the baby starts to respond, or the baby becomes unresponsive.

If the infant becomes unconscious, begin infant CPR immediately. Your Online CPR/AED Course will walk you through those steps so you can respond confidently if this ever happens.
