With the widespread COVID-19 pandemic and the probability of an increase in cardiac arrests, new 2020 CPR guidelines have been released. The modifications were made in an effort to limit the personnel attending to a patient, reduce provider exposure, and encourage bystander CPR with an emphasis on providing at least hands-only chest compressions.

American Health Care Academy has updated their First Aid and CPR courses online with this new 2020 Interim Guidance. Individuals are encouraged to go through the course (for free) if their CPR certification is still valid to become familiarized with the new CPR guidelines. If your CPR or First Aid certification is expired, you are encouraged to renew your certification to ensure that you are prepared if there is an emergency at home or in your community.

With social distancing in place, and many people working from home, there is an increased chance that you will have to attend to a family member in the event of an emergency.

The 2020 Interim CPR guidelines were updated by the American Heart Association in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Association of Respiratory Care, The Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

The “Interim Guidance for Basic and Advanced Life Support in Adults, Children, and Neonates with Suspected or Confirmed COVID-19,” was published on April 9, 2020.

Additional resources and guidance on CPR training can be found here. American Health Care Academy is also offering a 19% discount with the code STAYSAFE19 for all individuals who choose to certify during this COVID-19 pandemic. We want to educate as many people as possible so we can be better-prepared lay responders and healthcare providers for our families, friends, community members, and the global society.

April 17, 2018 Performing CPR0

When patients suffer from cardiac arrest, the best thing to do is to provide them the lifesaving method they need right away, which is CPR. However, in reviving a patient, it doesn’t always yield a 100% success rate. There are instances where performing CPR does not save the life of the victim.

Although CPR is known to be a lifesaving method, such instances cannot be predicted nor prevented. That is why the following below are the ways on how to deal with the patient’s death.

medical support

  • Do not feel guilty. Never feel mortified of helping a patient in need of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The end never justifies the means which is why if the patient dies even if you performed CPR on them, it doesn’t and will never mean that it is the rescuer’s fault.
  • Never blame one’s self if you cannot save the victim’s life. Something to keep in mind is that the patients whom rescuers are performing CPR on are already dead – clinically. This basically means that they are in the state of death as soon as their hearts stopped beating and it is the rescuers’ job to delay the event of a biological death which is permanent.
  • Rescuers should know how to accept the death of their patients. By providing CPR, the rescuer is attempting to increase the possibility of survival until medical support arrives.

Dealing with death is tough. That is why medical experts need to secure the safety of each and every patient that they accommodate. Yet, there are still times where a person’s death occurs in a place outside the hospital boundaries and that is when bystanders need to take action. At this point, it’s important to remember that you tried to save a life, and it is better to try to help, rather than do nothing at all. The person would have died if you did not try anyways. You gave me some hope.

The scenario mentioned above is the main reason why individuals must learn a thing or two about prolonging someone’s life using CPR. To learn more about it, applying for an online CPR course offered by the American Health Care Academy is highly commended. You will never know when these skills might come in handy someday.

What are the things to consider when choosing a CPR training center?

  1. The center must provide a certificate regarding the completion of the courses.
  2. The specific training course must be offered.
  3. There should be a legal authority regarding the operation of the center.
  4. The instructors must have CPR certifications.
  5. The review from the previous student must be positive.
  6. The necessary tools for training must be provided.

Immediate administering of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on a victim can increase his chances of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. This aid manually ensures the continuous operation of the circulatory system.

As the cases of sudden cardiac arrest increases, acquiring the skills to administer CPR is becoming more and more relevant. CPR training centers can provide the needed information and teach the needed skills to properly perform CPR.

Choosing a CPR training center is similar to choosing a school or college, there are various aspects to consider before enrolling. Here are some things to consider when picking a CPR training center.

CPR training center

Choose a training center that provides certification of the course completion

Other people take up first aid CPR training for employment purposes because several positions require CPR administering skills.

It is better to know early on if the center provides a certificate of completion, rather than completing the course and eventually finding out that there is no proof of course completion provided.

CPR Training Center

Inquire if the CPR training center offers the specific training that you are looking for

In terms of training for providing first-aid, especially for CPR training, there are various specifications to choose from since different people have varying conditions to consider. For further reference regarding the various training options, here are some common certifications offered:

1. Basic First Aid Certification

There are numerous health concerns that may suddenly occur. In case such situations might happen, administering basic first aid can heighten the chances of the victim to survive.

A basic first certification usually covers aid for situations like the following:

  • Sudden complications in the respiratory system
  • Steps to administer in case of a choking emergency
  • Concerns regarding the cycle of the Nervous system
  • Specific allergies that are suddenly triggered
  • Emergencies regarding insect bites or stings
  • Treatment of various wounds
  • Situations concerning specific muscles, bones, and even joints
  • Emergencies regarding the body’s response to cold or hot temperature
  • Burns acquired on the different parts of the body
  • Treatment of a poisoned person

The proper process for administering first aid is not the only lesson taught, but also the safety precautions to be observed.

2. CPR and AED Certification

A dominant cause of death that is wreaking havoc in the United States is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). In the event that a person suddenly undergoes a Sudden Cardia Arrest, immediate administration of a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation increases the possibility of that person to survive.

The main goal of a first aid CPR training is to teach people how to manually pump oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain and back to the heart again. Doing so will ensure the continuous operation of the circulatory and even respiratory system. The circulation of the two systems can establish the condition of the victim until an emergency medical team arrives and deliver more extensive medical aid.

CPR training courses discuss the various ways to assess the situation of the victim. To further explain the process of performing CPR, the proper steps which are compression-airway-breathing are explained. For an easy recollection of the steps, students should remember the initials C-A-B.

Due to the varying conditions of each person, a modified version of CPR administration is also taught. These variations target victims that are merely infants and children.

A first aid CPR training is also relevant for choking victims since such an accident involves the respiratory system. Again, situations like choking may also happen to children and even to pregnant women, thus, a specialized method of administering aid for a choking victim for these special cases are also administered.

Learning the proper handling of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is also taught in case it is needed and there is one available. This portable device assesses the rhythm of the heart and it can deliver electric shocks directly to the heart. Doing so will reestablish the natural rhythm of the heart.

3. Healthcare Provider CPR Certification

In general, this course is similar to a basic CPR training. The only difference between the courses is that AED administration training is that this certification trains for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital incidents.

legal authorization to operate

A training center with legal authorization to operate

The CPR training center must be following the legal guidelines of associations that are focused on monitoring the condition of the country’s cardiac health. Ensuring the legality of the center ensures that the courses are teaching the proper handling and administering of the aid.

CPR Certification Instructor

The instructors must have CPR Certification

Make sure that the instructors have undergone enough training for both delivering first aid and teaching the method of providing aid. As much as possible, it is better for the instructors to have the skills in disciplines such as basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, Pediatric Emergency Assessment, and Recognition and Stabilization. An instructor’s proficiency in these specific disciplines ensures that the students are provided ample information and techniques when aiding various types of people.

good reviewed training center

The training centers must have a good review

Visit the center’s website to see if the previous clients were satisfied with the quality of the training provided. Also, check if the website provides an adequate amount of information regarding the center since a transparent institution is easier to trust. As much as possible, the website contains pictures of the facility, and even of the staff.

first aid kit

The training center must provide the necessary tools for training

CPR training is not merely learning various medical concepts it also needs a practical approach to learn the proper administering of the aid. In order for the students to acquire the needed skills, several tools are utilized during the training, which is the following:

  • Manikins or dummies. For a more realistic simulation of the aid, dummies are utilized to ensure that the right compression pressure is administered. Compressions must not be too hard or the ribs may break, while light compressions may not deliver enough pressure to pump the blood which is why the right compression must be provided. The dummies provided must have adults, infants, and child versions since the manner of delivery slightly vary.
  • Ventilation Apparatuses. One common equipment is a bag-valve-mask (BVM) that can be provided the needed ventilation of the victim. This device also protects the rescuer from any contagious disease since there is no direct contact with the victim. Despite the simple appearance of this device, a BVM is difficult to utilize.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In order to restore the normal rhythm of the heart, an AED is needed. The proper handling of this portable equipment is important since the device is integrated with electric shocks. CPR training courses must teach the proper placing of the pads on the victim.

Key Takeaway

Make sure to take note of these when you search for a CPR training center. If you want to enroll at a CPR training center that is sure to cover all of the discussed aspects mentioned above, then enroll at American Health Care Academy.

With our certified professional trainers, we ensure that our students not only learn how to perform a successful CPR but also other basic first aid procedures.

What should people know about Anaphylaxis?

  1. The nature of this allergic reaction.
  2. The main causes are certain foods, medicines, insect bites, and latex material.
  3. To determine if a person is under Anaphylactic shock there are symptoms regarding respiration, blood circulation, skin condition, and other varying signals.
  4. There are two types of reactions, which are Uniphasic and Bi-phasic.
  5. Just like most health concerns, Anaphylaxis also has prescribed treatment.
  6. There are also several conditions that make a person more susceptible to having a severe allergic reaction.
  7. In order to avoid such fatal conditions, several precautions may be done.

Undergoing a CPR training can provide a person with the necessary skills that can aid numerous health concerns. CPR can even aid a person who is having a severe allergic reaction like Anaphylaxis.

Unlike the common allergic reaction, like sneezing or itching, Anaphylaxis can be fatal. To learn more about Anaphylaxis, here are the things you should be aware of.

Basic Information

Anaphylaxis is an allergic reaction due to exposure to a specific allergen that can potentially be fatal if not immediately addressed.

Generally, the body’s immune system releases a wave of antibodies to restrain the foreign body. This type of natural body reaction is harmless if the foreign body is substances that can harm the body. Examples of these harmful substances are bacteria and viruses.

As the immune system of the body reacts unsuitably to the possible threat, an allergic reaction takes place. Delayed delivery of treatment is life-threatening since breathing or the heartbeat may suddenly stop.

Allergic Reaction

Causes of the Allergic Reaction

For every effect, there is a cause and the same goes for an Anaphylactic reaction. There are several factors that can trigger this severe allergic reaction. Here are the common causes or allergens of an Anaphylactic shock.

This common allergen is prevalent specifically in children. Several people have a high level of sensitivity which causes the reaction to surface despite having only smelled the allergen and not ingested.

These are a quite common cause of food allergies. However, some food allergies are incorporated into peanut butter, peanut butter cups, or even peanut-flavored ice-cream can cause a reaction to a person who is allergic to it.

Tree nuts

Tree nuts such as almonds, cashew, walnut, and pine nut can cause an allergic reaction to a person. Allergies towards tree nuts often last a lifetime and people rarely outgrow it.

People can acquire an allergy to either vertebrates or invertebrates. Vertebrates that can cause allergic reactions are salmon, cod, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, tuna, eels, and rays. Invertebrates can also cause an Anaphylactic shock. Examples of allergens are prawns, lobster, crab, crayfish. Several mollusks like oysters, mussels, clams, octopuses, squids, and sea slugs can also be harmful to some people.

Dairy products

Among all dairy products, milk specifically is the most probable allergen.

Even though eggs can rarely cause an allergic reaction as severe as an Anaphylactic shock, it is still a possible allergen.

Both the egg white and egg yolks have proteins that could possibly be allergens. But, between the two parts, allergy to egg whites are more prevalent.

Even if the egg is merely incorporated into a dish as an ingredient, a person allergic to eggs can still have an allergic reaction.

Soy products

Products derived from soybeans can cause an allergic reaction to the surface. This specific type of allergy often begins in infancy and is outgrown eventually, though certain people still carry their soy allergy until adulthood.

Even several medicines can cause an allergic reaction in people. This is why a person receives an allergy test before admitted to the hospital.

Allergies towards this medicine are more evident when it is delivered through an injected shot compared to ingesting a pill.

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Specifically, non-steroidal medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen can cause more damage than cure.

Pain relievers

Even over-the-counter painkillers can initiate a reaction. Some muscle relaxant that is utilized as anesthesia can be allergens.

Although pollens are uncommon allergens, pollens such as ragweed and tree pollens are still possible allergens.

Insect bites

Bees, wasp, hornets, and fire ants have stings or bites that can stimulate a reaction.

Several people can develop an allergy towards items with parts made of latex. Medical tools like hospital gloves, syringes, and catheters have parts made up of latex. Balloons and rubber bands are examples of everyday products containing latex.

An Anaphylactic shock has symptoms that will indicate if a person is having an allergic reaction. Typically, the first signs of an Anaphylactic shot are as simple as a runny nose or a skin rash. More severe symptoms can arise after about 30 minutes. In addition, do take note that these will not all occur at the same time:

Respiratory Concerns

Cardiovascular Concerns Skin Condition Other Symptoms
Stuffy or Runny Nose Erratic Heartbeat The appearance of Hives and Rash Itchy or Swollen Tongue
Coughing Low Pulse Count Skin Redness

Wheezing Itchiness Diarrhea
Chest Tightness Cramps
Trouble Breathing
Tightness in Throat

Different Types of Reaction

Just like other illnesses or medical concerns, there are several ways regarding the way a body reacts. For an Anaphylactic shock, there are two types of reactions that a person might experience.

  • Uniphase. For this type of reaction, the symptoms instantaneously appear and rapidly worsen. But, upon application of the required medication, the symptoms quickly fade and do not re-occur.
  • Bi-phasic. The symptoms of this type of reaction initially appear either mild or severe. After a time, no symptoms will appear which will eventually escalate to a severe occurrence of symptoms. In addition to the already worsening condition, complications regarding the breathing and blood-pressure will arise. This type of reaction often occurs hours after the first reaction.

Due to the gravity of such a condition, immediate aid must be provided and a medical rescue team must be called immediately. Here are the steps to follow when aiding a person who is experiencing Anaphylactic shock.

  1. Position the person

If the victim is unconscious, laying down position is more ideal. While if the person is having trouble breathing, a sitting position will be more helpful.

  1. Provide the needed medicine

An adrenaline autoinjector, or more commonly called Epinephrine (EpiPen) is a shot that must be administered usually in the thigh area.

  1. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

If the person is not responding or has abnormal breathing, administer CPR as an aid.

Possible Risks

Some people have a higher risk of going into shock than others. Here are some conditions that heighten a person’s risk of a severe allergic reaction.

A previous case of Anaphylaxis

A person who has already had a previous attack has a high risk of another reaction that can be more severe than the initial one. Families with a history of Anaphylaxis should undergo CPR training, or even an online CPR training, to ensure that the members are capable of providing aid in case the EpiPens are not effective.

Allergies and Asthma

People with allergies or asthma have a high possibility of going into shock when triggered.

Anaphylaxis can occur anytime and anywhere, that is why people must be cautious. People who have a history of Anaphylaxis and even those who haven’t must take note of these precautions.

  • Wear a medical necklace. This can act as a guide of the substances a person is allergic to.
  • Always carry needed medicines. People who have conditions that are of the high risk of an attack should always carry at least 2 shots with them all the time. Take note of the expiration date of the shots, these normally have a shelf life of 12 months.
  • Check the label. People diagnosed with specific food allergies must always scrutinize thoroughly the labels to ensure that the food does not contain any possible allergens.

Key Takeaway

Anaphylactic shock is a serious and fatal condition that can be caused by anything in the surrounding environment. It can also happen to anybody, which is why undergoing CPR training. Even online CPR training can provide the necessary skills to combat a severe allergic reaction.

What are the basic things to know about providing CPR for pregnant women?

  1. Normal biological changes that occur in a woman’s body during pregnancy

  • Cardiovascular
  • Respiratory
  1. Steps to follow when providing CPR to a pregnant woman

  • Check Airways
  • Displace the Uterus
  • Provide Compressions
  1. Needed care after resuscitation

  • Airways
  • Breathing
  • Circulation
  1. Emergency Evacuation

Giving first aid, specifically cardiopulmonary resuscitation or most commonly known as CPR, is a serious task and must be executed properly. More so when it is applied to special cases such as infants and pregnant women.

A pregnant lady may be required to be provided with CPR for various reasons, some of which are due to sudden cardiac arrest or unresponsiveness after choking. Due to their delicate condition, pregnant women are provided with a varying way of administering CPR. That’s why by undergoing CPR training, you can learn the various CPR techniques that are applicable to these diverse conditions.

CPR on Pregnant Woman’s

Biological Changes That Happen to a Pregnant Woman’s Body That Can Influence Regular Resuscitations

Here are several reasons why pregnancy is a delicate condition:

  1. Cardiovascular

During pregnancy, a woman may develop physiological anemia. Such conditions occur because the blood volume increases at a higher percentage than the increase in red blood cells.

In order to regulate the vast volume of blood, the heart rate of pregnant woman hikes by 15%.

  1. Respiratory

Similar to the cardiovascular system, a woman’s respiratory system also varies from a woman’s usual circulation. In order to provide oxygen to both the fetus and the mother, a woman’s oxygen consumption increases by 20%.

In relation to the biological changes of a pregnant woman, specifically the cardiovascular system, the increase of blood volume can result in vascular engorgement. This condition is the root of swelling of the airway and possible displacement of the trachea.

Administering CPR to a Pregnant Woman

Steps in Administering CPR to a Pregnant Woman

Assess Airways

Just like the regular CPR, the aid given to adults who are not pregnant, the initial step is to assess the airways, breathing, and circulation. This step is a standard operating procedure that is surely taught during CPR training.

Displace the Uterus

In order to lessen the aortocaval compression, the uterus must first be displaced. There are two possible ways to displace the uterus. The first one is by placing a rolled towel under the right hip of the woman. This will pull the uterus towards the left side of the body. However, this technique in displacing the uterus can lessen the effectiveness of chest compressions due to the tilted position of the shoulders.

The second technique is the manual pulling of the uterus towards the left side. With this technique, it is greatly recommended that two people will perform CPR, most especially for pregnant women. This is better so that one would secure the position of the uterus while the other perform compressions.

The proper depth of compression is important to ensure that the force is not too strong or too weak. Learning the accurate compression strength and depth can be done through enrolling in a first aid and CPR training class.

Begin Compressions

The initial compressions would not yet require rescue breaths to be administered. The compressions will secure that oxygenated blood flows through the major veins. After 30 consecutive compressions, immediately follow up with two rescue breaths.

After Resuscitation Care

After Resuscitation Care

The delivery of aid does not end after the patient is resuscitated. Another standard operating procedure in CPR for pregnant woman are the aftercare ABCs, which are as follows:

Even after resuscitation, a pregnant woman remains at high risk for aspiration of gastric contents. The intubations must remain connected to the woman until she is entirely conscious and can manage to breathe on her own.

For further assessment of the condition of her respiratory tract, it is best to have an X-ray taken.

Important Facts About Airway Modification:

  • Proper basic life support can provide better ventilation, chest excursion, and oxygenation.
  • Advanced airway placement is crucial for a maternal cardiac arrest case, that is why the preparation must be done properly and thoroughly.

Double-check if spontaneous respiration reoccurs and if there is a need for adequate ventilation. A pregnant woman would normally need to be intubated for a certain time period after resuscitation. The added mechanical ventilation maintains and regulates the arterial blood gas values for the pregnant woman. If there are respiratory distress, immediately determine and provide the necessary aid.

Points to monitor regarding a patient’s breathing:

  • Ensure proper oxygenation and avoid desaturation
  • The occurrence of respiratory alkalosis must be avoided
  • Adjust down the volumes of ventilation
  • Make sure to prevent aspirations

Continuously monitor the cardiac rhythm and assess the vital signs. Other things to continuously monitor are fluid status, blood count, and electrolytes. In addition, it is also important that one’s urine is tested to use as an indicator of possible organ perfusion.

Emergency Evacuation

Emergency Evacuation

In the event that a pregnant woman does not regain consciousness after chest compressions, the baby will be immediately removed by cesarean section.

Key Takeaway

Given all these things, it is indeed true that pregnant women are delicate due to their current condition. In the event that a pregnant lady would require CPR and other medical help, the aid provided must be firm to ensure a successful aid, yet gentle due to the sensitive nature of the patients.

When a hospitalized victim’s heart stops beating, doctors and hospital staff immediately turn to the latest technology to restart the victim’s heart. However, when a person experiences cardiac arrest as far from the hospital as possible, the only way for them to survive that life-threatening event is for a person that has adequate training in CPR to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

This is entirely true, as having ample knowledge about CPR can ultimately save a life before the paramedics show up. As George Rome, a nurse from Baton Rouge General Medical Center and CPR certified Instructor, stated, “In the field, all you have is CPR to rely on.”

There are many varying factors that may contribute to a person suddenly experiencing cardiac arrest. According to Rome, for most adults, cardiac arrest is mostly caused by arrhythmia or heart disease. Then for teenagers and young adults, the most common cause of cardiac arrest is an overdose of prescription or illegal drugs. For children, the likelihood of cardiac arrest happening is low, but it does happen through accidents and instances of drowning. Lastly, for infants, the most common cause is respiratory illnesses. Rome specified that “It causes them to have a lot more mucus and not breathe as well.”

It is highly encouraged by all experts that have gone through CPR training and certification that all people that are in close proximity to infants and children take up CPR training and certification. It just takes an hour of a person’s time, but it can definitely lead to you saving a life. If you cannot spare an hour of your daytime, you can opt to take up online CPR classes at the American Health Care Academy.

Here are tips recommended by experts that could get you ready for any emergency or accidents:

Always Dial 911

Always Dial 911

“A lot of times, you first want to call 911 on an adult. On an infant, it’s usually not something cardiac that’s causing the arrest. It’s usually something respiratory. So if you start CPR first, that will help and get them breathing again”, said George Rome. However, to best deal with the incident, dial 911, and put them on the speaker to listen to their instructions regarding the compressions or how you can properly perform CPR.

Knowing the CPR Basics

Knowing the CPR Basics

As experts recommend, the placement of the hands should just be below the line where the nipples of the person are aligned – it doesn’t matter whether it is on adults, children, or babies. After positioning your hands, perform 30 chest compressions then give 2 breaths. Repeat the process over and over again until the person shows signs of breathing or their heart starts beating. Always remember that your hands should always be in the middle of the breast bone, if not, you can risk breaking their ribs.

Chest Compressions are for Children and above not for Infants

Chest Compressions are for Children and above, not for Infants

Instead of chest compressions, the American Heart Association recommends that you only perform mouth to mouth breathing on the infant. CPR that involves hand-use means that you can only perform compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute.

Know When to Close the Victims Nose

Know When to Close the Victim’s Nose

For the mouth to mouth breathing, the pinching of the nose is a common move. However, for infants, you should not pinch their nose but instead, breathe into both their mouth and nose. You have to ensure that all the air you are giving them is received. If the infant’s chest does not expand during the process of mouth to mouth breathing, move or tilt their head slightly and try again.

Know the Proper Pressure for Varying Ages

Know the Proper Pressure for Varying Ages

Here’s what you need to know regarding the proper pressure to apply:

  • Infants – If chest compression is necessary, compress the chest by using only your index and middle fingers.
  • Children – Only apply chest compressions through the use of the palm of one hand.
  • Adults – Go back to basics and use both your hands.

Keep Them Alive by Knowing Stayin' Alive

Keep Them Alive by Knowing “Stayin’ Alive”

The normal rate for chest compressions is between 100 to 120 beats per minute. Which is, coincidentally, the same beat as the Bee Gees classic “Stayin’ Alive” as the American Heart Association concluded. However, most people do not know the song and that is why it is important to know this manner of counting: “one and two and three and four” at a fast pace.

Don't Give Up

Don’t Give Up

Lastly, the most important thing for you to do is not to give up on the victim. It’s either you stop until they start responding or until the authorities arrive and take matters into their expert hands.

Key Takeaway

Here are some statistics that necessitate the ability to perform CPR:

  • One in seven people gets to perform CPR on a victim
  • In the United States, and upwards of 650,000 people die from a heart attack annually
  • Before reaching the hospital, almost 350,000 people die immediately
  • Brain damage or death begins when the victim has experienced a cardiac arrest for more than 4 to 6 minutes
  • Annually, there are 500,000 instances of stroke in the United States
  • Annually, the United States has 6,000 drowning incidents and 3,100 airway obstruction incidents

These are just some of the reasons why you should learn CPR. However, the decision still falls on you. Make the world a better place by having the ability to save a life – it may never happen, but it is always better to be ready than be caught off guard.

What do you need to know about American Heart Month?

  1. American Heart Month History
  2. American Heart Month Advocacy
  3. The lifestyle improvements to be made.
  4. American Heart Month Events

February is more popular around the world as the month of love. However, for Americans, February is also the ideal month to celebrate American Heart Month and promote the ideal lifestyle that can help in combatting possible cardiovascular diseases.

Chocolates and flowers are not the only things promoted in the United States during February. Enrolling in CPR training is also encouraged as a means of first aid treatment for cardiac arrests.

American Heart Month Its History

American Heart Month: Its History

The first-ever American Heart Month was proclaimed by former President Lyndon B. Johnson through his Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963. After the proclamation, the first American Heart Month was held in the month of February 1964.

The joint resolution which requests that the American Heart Month be established as an annual event was filed by The Congress. American Heart Month was instituted during a time when the majority of the deaths in the United States was rooted in cardiovascular illness.

Promote Awareness

Promote Awareness

The main goal of this month-long celebration is to raise awareness regarding the alarming effect that cardiac illness has on Americans for decades.

Citizens must be aware that heart problems, which is caused by several factors, is the top killer illness in the country. Despite its history that has caused a vast demise, cardiac illness can be managed and prevented. In order to do so, there are some measurements that a person must often check, which are as follows:

Leading Killer

Despite multiple decades’ worth of campaigns that ushers the promotion of better cardiac health, heart diseases are still the prime cause of death in the country.

Here are several heart diseases that people should be wary of, since prolonged aid may lead to an early demise:

Heart Attack

This illness can also be called Myocardial Infarction that happens when the heart is not supplied with sufficient blood.

Heart Failure

Often called as chronic heart failure or congestive heart failure, this is the condition that the heart is unable to pump ample blood and oxygen that could reach the organs. Unfortunately, a person diagnosed with heart failure cannot be cured aside for a heart transplant.

Risk Factor

Aside from a person’s lifestyle, there are other distinct factors, both controllable and uncontrollable, that could lead to cardiovascular illness.

Being a parent is not a joke. It is a privilege and, at the same time, a big responsibility. With a newborn in your family, you should always ensure the safety of your precious little one.

However, as your kids grow older, different injuries may occur. Becoming knowledgeable about several first aid tips such as training in CPR and knowing what to do in specific emergencies will be very useful when dealing with various injuries or accidents.

On the other hand, if you have ample knowledge and the skill to perform first aid techniques, then here are some effective tips that may definitely help you in case of emergency – most especially when it comes to your children.

Many children are fond of playing with toys – either small or big. However, those who are playing with small ones have higher risks of being involved in incidents such as choking. Choking is an emergency situation where the person’s airway has been blocked by a food or an object. To respond to a choking victim, do the following steps:

  1. Assess the situation. Check whether the person is really choking or not. If he/she only nods or is unable to respond to your questions, proceed to the next step.
  2. Stand and kneel behind the victim.
  3. Make a fist with one hand and place it on the person’s abdomen just above the belly button.
  4. Grab your fist with the other hand and give quick, upward abdominal thrusts.
  5. Continue performing abdominal thrusts until the object has been dislodged and the person can breathe or cough forcefully, or the person becomes unconscious.
  6. If the victim falls unconscious, this is the best time for your CPR training to come in. Perform CPR on the victim and regularly check if their pulse has begun again.

  2. Apply ointment if it is only a minor burn.
  3. Call for 911 or medical assistance when the victim is already suffering from a third or fourth-degree burn.
  4. Take pain relievers such as ibuprofen, if needed.

For poisoning emergencies, do the following:

  1. Assess the situation before going into action. Look out for leaking containers of poison because it may cause harm to you as you respond to the victim.
  2. Wear your own personal protective equipment.
  3. Call 911 or the National Poison Control 1-800-222-1222 and follow the instructions they will give you.

  6. Move the person to a poison-free scene, if possible.

  1. Assess the scene carefully and ready your first aid kit.
  2. Identify the type of wound emergency the victim is having before proceeding with medication.
