What Causes Workplace Injuries
To create a risk-free life it is important for you to establish a healthy environment around yourself. Nothing is more precious then your life and it’s in your hands to attain proper knowledge to prevent possible injuries.
At any given day, we spent the longest time at work, thus the probability of getting hurt or injured is highest at work. There are many different workplace settings; each with its own hazards, challenges and risks. If we can manage and recognize the risks, we may be able to minimize the chances of on-the-job injuries.
Work related, personal, and/or family induced stress may make you behave in a more careless or unusual manner. Under these circumstances your actions can be unsafe and hurt you while at work. It is essential that you learn to recognize your behavior when it becomes dangerous and consciously try to control your stress.
Secondly, you must ensure that your workplace ergonomics are at an optimal level. Ergonomics studies the design of tasks and equipment at the workplace as it best fits a worker’s needs, to maximize efficiency. These may include purchasing the proper chair to help with back discomfort or learning the proper positioning of your wrists (while typing on the computer) to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. According to CNN, 80 percent of Americans will suffer from back pain at some point in their lifetime, and most of the time these back injuries will occur at work. It’s important to note that it’s not necessary that back injuries only occur when you take part in a physically straining task at work. You should know the proper positioning of your body, or ergonomics, when you lift even the lightest objects to prevent hurting your back.
Violence at the workplace also comes in many forms. Whether it be physical, psychological or unwanted harassment, the risk and threat of being hurt may extend from the workplace to your personal life and may even reel in your family. Once again recognize these violent actions and handle cautiously to ensure your safety.
Additionally – watch your step! Falls, slips, and trips are very common forms of on-the-job injuries. These can be caused because of carelessness, misplaced items, wet floors, broken/damaged floors, extended cables, relocated desks and chairs, and many others. You need to watch your step and keep your eyes open to avoid these common accidents.
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) is also normally caused at the workplace when “body movement” and the “work activity’ is not synchronized. This can cause physical stress and tense the muscles, nerves and joints and can lead to chronic injuries in the long-run.
These are just a few of the numerous dangers that may lurk around you at work. They may be the simplest things you overlook or may even be things that can lead to long impacting injuries; regardless the case, you need to learn about the possible risks at your work environment. New-hires go through safety training before beginning a new job – one of the many methods setup for injury prevention. So become active and recognize the risks around you so you don’t jeopardize your well-being at work!
